LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY & APPROVAL

Frequently asked questions about vehicle lighting.

ECE markings, driving lights, reference numbers and installation explained.

What do the E-mark and ECE R10, R112, R148, R149 and R65 mean? +

The various ECE markings indicate the regulations under which a light has been tested and approved. ECE R10 covers electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). ECE R112 is an older regulation for headlamps used to illuminate the road and can still be found on appropriately approved lights. ECE R149 now covers, among other things, headlamps used for road illumination such as high beam. ECE R148 covers various light-signalling functions, including position lights. ECE R65 covers special warning lamps.

Important: An E-mark alone does not automatically mean that a light is approved for every lighting function on public roads. The number following the E, for example E1 or E4, identifies the country whose approval authority granted the type approval. The relevant ECE approval and the markings for the specific lighting function are decisive.

For use on public roads, the respective lighting function must have the appropriate approval. An ECE R10 approval alone, for example, only confirms electromagnetic compatibility and is not an approval for use as a driving, position or warning light.

What does the reference number 100 mean for driving lights? +

Driving lights carry a reference number that represents an approval-related value for their maximum luminous intensity. The permitted total of the reference numbers of all high-beam headlamps that can be switched on simultaneously must be observed. When additional driving lights are installed, the existing high-beam headlamps of the vehicle must therefore also be taken into account.

Do additional driving lights have to be installed in pairs? +

Not every permitted configuration can be determined simply by the number of lights. The vehicle, approval, installation and electrical switching must all be taken into account. Under German road traffic regulations, high-beam headlamps must be switchable simultaneously or in pairs and all must switch off when changing to dipped beam. The relevant approval and intended installation should therefore always be checked before installation.

What is the difference between driving lights and work lights? +

Driving lights are designed to illuminate the road while driving and require the appropriate approval for this purpose. Work lights, on the other hand, are intended to illuminate work equipment or working areas. Under German road traffic regulations, work lights generally may not be used while driving, although exceptions apply to certain types of working vehicles.

How are additional LED driving lights connected? +

Power is typically supplied via the battery, a fuse and a relay. The vehicle's high-beam signal controls the relay or a suitable control unit. On modern vehicles, the high-beam signal may be controlled via CAN bus or PWM. In these cases, a suitable CAN bus or signal module may be required. The exact wiring always depends on the vehicle and the light being installed.

Can white or amber position lights be used on public roads? +

On our appropriately approved Euralight driving lights, the white position light may be used on public roads. The respective light has the required approval for this lighting function.

Amber front position lights are not permitted for use as position lights on public roads in Germany. This function is intended exclusively for use away from public roads.

Häufige Fragen zur Fahrzeugbeleuchtung.

ECE-Kennzeichnungen, Fernscheinwerfer, Lichtkennzahl und Anschluss einfach erklärt.

Was bedeuten E-Prüfzeichen sowie ECE R10, R112, R148, R149 und R65? +
